Shoot for more frequent workouts vs. longer workouts

A tried and true fact is that it's better for you to workout more frequently throughout the week, rather than trying to have 1 or 2 days where you just destroy yourself in the gym or running on the road. High intensity workouts generate free-radicals in your body, which you may have heard of. Super-long workouts create a great abundance of those that can be damaging to many cells in your body. Shorter workouts keep these free radicals to a lower level in your body, making them more manageable (also lets those antioxidants you keep hearing about do their job and get rid of them).

Aim to keep your workouts between 35-55 minutes. Anything longer than that, you are likely not pushing yourself hard enough during those 35-55 minutes and could be making better use of your time.

The only reason to go beyond that time frame is if you are training for a specific event, such as a marathon, where you are clearly active for much longer than 1 hour. If doing so, be sure to give yourself a carbohydrate snack (or some gatorade) throughout as workouts over 1 hour greatly deplete glycogen stores and your body simply cannot maintain the same level of performance.
